A few weeks ago I got stuck at the harbor entrance and had to wait two hours for the water to rise again. Even though the map shows a 2.5m standard water depth for the whole harbor, the water level sank down to 0.6m in some areas.
To find out the real topography of the ground I built a small logging device using an Arduino and echo sounder to collect data on water depths. This and some data from Wasser&Schiffahrtsamt for tidal correction were fed into a small python snippet with Matplotlib to create a 3D map of the water depths.
Hackaday was kind enough to write about this project! Thanks!
